Good Friday Tenebrae Worship Service at Trinity UMC

Good Friday Tenebrae Worship Service at Trinity UMC

Friday, April 6th

11 am-3 pm  SHUMC Church Open for Prayer

6:30 pm Tenebrae Service at Trinity United Methodist Church

The word “tenebrae” comes from the Latin meaning “darkness.” The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Good Friday service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus’ burial.  This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus’ death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, sometimes with a final candle, the Christ candle, carried out of the sanctuary, symbolizing the death of Jesus. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus’ tomb. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ’s death and await the coming Resurrection.

“Sarah’s Key” by Tatiana de Rosnay

Sarah’s Key (French: Elle s’appelait Sarah) is a French drama starring Kristin Scott-Thomas and follows an American journalist’s present-day investigation into the Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup (where French police in German-occupied Paris on 16 and 17 July 1942 rounded up 13,152 predominantly non-French Jewish emigres and refugees and their French-born children and grandchildren, who were then shipped by rail to Auschwitz where they were murdered). It tells the story of a young girl’s experiences during these events, vividly illustrating the willing, and even enthusiastic, participation of the French bureaucracy, including the Paris police, French Secret Service, and French army in aiding and abetting this Nazi persecution and the plundering by the Germans and French of the victims’ property. It is also a story of how a farmer and his wife, and by extension a number of French country people, hid and protected Jews from Vichy authorities, the Germans, and French collaborators, at great risk to their own lives. It is an adaptation of the novel Elle s’appelait Sarah (“Her Name Was Sarah”) by Tatiana de Rosnay and has been critically well-received, currently holding a 73% rating on the film review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.[2] Although British, Scott-Thomas delivers her English dialogue in an American accent, but for most of the film she speaks fluent French as she is Anglo-French. She has done many Anglo-French movies in French, and received a César Award nomination for her compelling performance in this role. In the movie she is married to a Frenchman and their daughter speaks both French and American-accented English.

Dear Pastor,

It was a great blessing to be a part of your morning service.  The warm and gracious reception on the part of Southern Hills UMC was genuinely felt and appreciated and your “Spring Cleaning” message was inspiring.  Your congregation’s love for the Word is obvious.  The offering that was given in the amount of $146 is evidence of what we consider to be a partnership between the church and The Gideons International in providing God’s Word to a lost world.  Please know that these funds will be used in their entirety to provide Scriptures in the traffic lanes of life.  Certainly we can pray for searching hearts to be touched-and for souls to be saved-by the way of these Scriptures.  Thank you especially for your gracious hospitality and your prayerful support of the Gideon work.  We pray that your continue to enjoy God’s abundant blessings for yourself, your family, and your ministry in the days ahead.

Sincerely, Steve Hill, Gideons of Oklahoma

Are You Toting Around Harmful Bacteria?

Cross-contamination occurs when disease-causing bacteria are transferred from one food to another therefore it is simple for bacteria from raw foods to contaminate produce & other foods.

-if you use a reusable tote bag:

  • Frequently was it in a washing machine or by hand in soapy, hot water
  • Put meat, poultry & seafood in separate totes, not with produce or ready-to-eat items
  • Clean all areas where you place your totes
  • Store in a clean, dry location & AVOID leaving totes in the trunk of a vehicle.
  • Refrigeration Inspection – The way to ensure your refrigerator is safe & germ-free:
  • Make sure it is set at 40 degrees or below & the freezer set to 0 degrees or below
  • Wipe up spills immediately with hot, soapy water & rinse
  • Weekly throw out perishable foods that have not been eaten
  • Open box of baking soda to reduce odors
  • Clean exterior , especially the handles
  • Several times a year , lean the condenser coil with a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove dirt,
  • Etc.
