Jeff Jaynes was born and raised in the Tulsa area. He and his wife Adriane graduated from high schools in Tulsa and grew up in the United Methodist Church. They love to travel, and are big fans of sports and the arts. Our pastor's educational experience and training includes:

Georgetown University, B.A. in Government and Theology
Duke University, Masters of Divinity

 

Jeff and Adriane have a passion for the Tulsa area and its people. Before answering the call to ministry, Jeff worked in a variety of public service positions at the local and national levels. He and Adriane look forward to meeting you!

In 1959, Joe McArthur (a history teacher at Central High School) was appointed to begin the groundwork for a new Methodist congregation in the Southern Hills area. In three months, he had found enough people to begin and the “John Wesley Methodist Church” commenced. It met in the Marshall Elementary School and started with eight adults and four children.

As interest and enthusiasm grew, the meeting place shifted to a small stone house located on our present location. There was a basement that could be used for youth and other classes. The first pastor was appointed to serve here with the 1960 annual conference. The early years were filled with lots of hard work and commitment from all this church's pioneers.

In 1962, the name of the church was changed from John Wesley to “Southern Hills.” Groundbreaking for the church building (our current Fellowship Hall) was in 1963. The first services in the new sanctuary took place just ahead of Christmas that year. The old stone house continued to be used for Sunday School classes and had a youth Coffee House in the basement.

Plans were made to build a new sanctuary in 1979 to be joined to the existing church facility. The plans put an emphasis on being a more contemporary style. Even the entrance was designed to speak of biblical and theological meanings.

Through the years, these buildings have been updated and changed to meet the needs of God's mission for Southern Hills UMC. But through it all, one thing has remained constant: the desire of this gathering of God's children to follow the call of God in mission to the world!

We are excited about the things God is doing here at Southern Hills UMC. Each week brings new opportunities for service and mission and each new member brings new ideas and energy. Our membership is open to people of all ages, nations, and races and we cherish all who bring new perspectives on the world in which we live.
