In February we provided the church congregation with a financial outlook for the year 2012. It indicated we had a budget shortfall of $24,272. Today, I have some good news to report. First, several additional church members have turned in contribution pledges for the year. And second, January and February pledged and non-pledged contributions are $6,200 over budget, which is a great start! Your strong support of Southern Hills dedication to God’s work through our mission programs is alive and doing well.

Now, a brief update on our Action Plans to help meet our budget shortfall. First, Brenda Bishop is leading the way on increasing church membership. She will continue to provide you with updates on those efforts. The second action plan includes fund raising projects. There are several near term activities being planned, including a musical festival, a church garage sale, which will include an animal blessing ceremony, and other ideas that are being considered for later in the year. Finally, we are pursuing donations from several foundations that we hope will provide financial support for our mission work for this year and future ears.

We again encourage everyone in our church to participate in the upcoming events.

We are blessed with chemicals that are manufactured to make our lives easier. Manmade chemical products are used by us every day as agents for cleaning, lawn and garden care, and more. Questions we usually fail to ask “What’s in this product?”, and “How will this product affect me, others, and the environment?”

In 1976 congress under President Gerald Ford, passed TSCA (toss-ka) the Toxic Substances Control Act. It is our nation’s main law aimed at regulating chemicals used in everyday products. Below is a summary of TSCA’s limitations:

Americans assume that chemicals used to make products like toys and food containers sold in the U.S. are regulated and tested for safety — but they are not.

Instead of requiring chemical manufacturers to demonstrate that their products are safe before they go into use, the law says the government has to prove actual harm in order to control or replace a dangerous chemical.

When passed into law, TSCA approved more than 60,000 chemicals that were in existence prior to 1976; only 200 of the original 60,000 chemicals have been tested for safety; some uses of only 5 of these toxic substances have been restricted.

Today there are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market, which have never been fully assessed for toxic impacts on human health and the environment.

TSCA allows chemical manufacturers to keep the ingredients in some chemicals secret — nearly 20 percent of the 80,000 chemicals are secret, according to EPA.

TSCA makes it difficult for consumers and businesses to find the information they need to identify which chemicals are safe and unsafe.

The American Cancer Association states cancer rates over the past 2 decades have risen significantly. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US with more than 1.5 million people diagnosed with new cases of cancer in 2009. The lifetime chance of a man developing invasive cancer is 1 in 2, and women 1 in 3. Childhood cancers have significantly increased especially leukemia and brain cancer.

Common pesticides are now found in the core blood of newborns.

Not all manmade chemicals are harmful. Yet they are chemicals, even some found in toothpaste have been found to be linked to cancer. Please think twice before using pesticides. Many pesticides kill harmful and beneficial insects. Please be aware of what chemicals are in the products you use. For more useful information: EPA, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and www.saferchemicals.org.

When we grow to understand our need for a savior and give our life to the Christ who has given his life for us we JOIN a family of believers. God sent Jesus to gather the human race together and transform them into servant leaders. God sent Jesus, as scripture tells us, “to draw all persons” to the Creator. God created us for a relationship, sin splintered that relationship, and Jesus was God’s way of restoring us into a right relationship. That restoration means a recovery of our original purpose–that of working on behalf of the Creator to create and ensure wholeness throughout all creation.

We were created as “connected” human beings. We were created to be wonderfully connected to God and one another. And, as we recover our “original” design through the death and resurrection of Jesus we recover that connectedness. We are family. We are a working family.

When a person “joins” a church we are basically saying, “I understand I am a part of you and you are part of me!” We are saying, “I choose to join with you so together we can work for God’s kingdom to become a reality here and now.” Membership in a church is not a statistical event, it is a life event. Membership in a church in not simply something we “do.” Members are “who we are” due to our relationship with God and Jesus the Christ.

So, what does this mean? A couple of things:

1) If we are attending and have basically chosen a congregation as our church home, then we need to formalize that membership. We need to say to those around us, “I join with you in serving Christ in the world.” We need to say, by joining, “You can count on me and I am counting on you!”

2) Membership also reminds us we are enjoined to Christ and one another for a purpose. We are a working body. We worship—and more! We pray—and more! We give—and more! The more—is making ourselves, our personal skills and energy available to the entire body of believers (the Church).

Are you already a member of Southern Hills UMC–Praise God! Use your energy, time, talents and gifts to make a difference here, in the church, community and world.

Not a member yet? Then, come on down on a Sunday morning during the invitation. Let others know you have chosen to work alongside of them. I hope and pray you will consider joining Southern Hills UMC!

Peace, Tracy

This mother’s day, instead of your usual gift to the wonderful women in your life (moms, grandma’s, etc.), consider giving them Transformation, Project Transformation, that is!

Each summer, our camp makes trips to the Aquarium, Blue Bell Factory, the Planetarium and more. Each of these has a cost, but you can help by donating money in honor or memory of your mom or grandma.

With your help, we can provide transportation, and even more Transformation to these great kiddos. What better way to recognize the one who provided these things for you? Donate by taking a card off the Wish List in the foyer or in the offering plate on Sunday!

Thank you to all Mother’s Everywhere! May the Holy Spirit grant all Mother’s joy and peace!

Lately, more and more people are coming in lately for assistance with our FISH program (Furnishing Individuals Support and Hope). This program helps people who are currently in a financial crisis move toward self-sufficiency. Most people who need our assistance are not much different from you or me. They have often had something happen to them in their lives like an accident, a health issue, or a job loss. They don’t want to have to ask for help, but they need a hand up from their situation. If you would like to help give this hand up, you can give financially to help support this important program.
